○ ‘Korea Medical Cannabis Organization’(Representative Rev. Sung Seok Kang) and ‘The Association of Korean Medicine’(President KMD. Hyug Yong Choi) Signed MOU Agreement on June 24, 2020

○ Through the agreement, both of organizations agreed to cooperate closely to expand the use of medical cannabis for disease treatment and health promotion purposes.

○ KMCO are the first organization in Asia to pass the ‘medical cannabis law’. As a result of the KMCO’s amendment campaign, the Korean National Assembly passed the “Act on Drug Management” (Medical Cannabis Act) on November 23, 2018 with 205 votes in favor, 1 vote in opposition and 15 votes.

○However, due to regulations of the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, only ‘Cannabis-derived  medicines’ are being prescribed at higher-level general hospitals. Only Epidiolex and Sativex are prescribed for patients with intractable epilepsy and multiple sclerosis.

○KMCO will conduct a medical cannabis prescription campaign as a herbal medicine through a MOU agreement with AKOM.

○At the ceremony, Rev. Kang said, ‘The domestic cannabis Prescription system should be designated as ‘essential business’ like the dispensaries in other countries.’
